Instagram strengthens teen protection: new privacy and control features

Instagram is constantly innovating in its features and in usability for the user. This time, in an effort to improve teenagers’ safety on its platform, it has rolled out a series of new privacy and control features for the accounts of young people under 16.

What does this new update mean?
Instagram has rolled out several updates aimed at reducing teenagers’ exposure to unwanted interactions, protecting their personal information and encouraging more responsible use of this social network.

Privacy by default for new accounts
From now on, all new accounts belonging to users under 16 (or 18 in certain countries) will be private by default. This means only people who accept will be able to see their posts and stories. Existing users will receive a notification encouraging them to switch their accounts to private if they have not already done so.

Improved filters for potentially sensitive content
Instagram is also increasing restrictions for teenagers in relation to sensitive content. The platform has improved the content control settings for teenagers, limiting what they can see by default. If a teenager already has more restrictive settings, Instagram will ask them to keep those settings.

Preventing unwanted contact
To prevent unwanted interactions, Instagram has strengthened its measures to stop adults who do not follow teenagers from finding their accounts in the “People you may know” sections or through comments on public posts.

New technology to protect teenagers
Instagram is introducing new tools that make it possible to detect potentially suspicious behaviour by adults. For example, when an adult shows behaviour patterns that could be considered risky, such as sending direct messages to teenagers who do not follow them, the platform will show them warnings or restrict their ability to send messages.

Education and tools for parents
As well as the protection features, Instagram is providing more educational resources for parents and teenagers, including improved parental controls and safety guides so families can navigate the network more safely and responsibly.

What does this mean for teenagers?
These new features not only provide a safer environment for teenagers, they also help educate them about the importance of privacy on social media. By defaulting accounts to private and limiting access to potentially harmful content, Instagram is taking a step forward in creating a safer digital space for its youngest users.

How does it affect advertisers and content creators?
Although these measures focus on protecting teenagers, advertisers and content creators should also be aware of the changes. Lower exposure to teen accounts may reduce the reach of some ads aimed at this age group. However, this policy strengthens trust and safety on the platform, which could lead to a more positive experience for both users and brands.

Instagram has taken a significant step towards protecting teenagers from unwanted interactions and inappropriate content. This effort shows the platform’s commitment to its community’s wellbeing, especially that of its youngest users. Companies and content creators should keep on top of these updates in order to adapt and keep offering valuable content in a safe environment.

At Proment Consulting, we are keeping an eye on these changes so we can adapt our strategies for digital marketing in social media, ensuring that brands keep connecting effectively with their audiences without compromising user safety.
